Kotara high school is a comprehensive co-educational high school located in the city of Newcastle. We have over 1000 students and approximately 100 staff including teachers and support staff. In 2001 we were very fortunate to add a second deputy principal to our executive team. This has enabled us to split the duties and to better satisfy the needs of staff and students.
The school prides itself on teamwork between staff, students, parents and members of the community. Kotara High has a strong SRC and a very active P & C. The P&C meets on the third Monday of the month at 7.00pm
Kotara High School has excellent programs in all Key Learning Areas. Our academic, cultural, sporting and student welfare opportunities abound. Our school consistently achieves above average results in many subjects and competitions while providing a number of support programs for students with special needs. One such program is our Hearing Support Unit in which specialist teachers teach two classes of students from year 7 – 12 in specialist classrooms while also supporting students in mainstream classes. The school operates an effective and supportive program for our Gifted and Talented Students.
Our excellent results in public examinations over the years have won the school great respect in the region. Our reputation for delivering excellence is unchallenged. Over 50% of our Year 12 students receive first round offers to university every year.
While the school was established in 1968, it has changed a great deal over the years. A number of additional buildings have been added, the Library has been extended and multi-purpose centre opened in 1997. Kotara High is flanked by 3 hectares of bushland that makes up part of the school grounds. Since 2000 there have been significant improvements made to the bushland as a result of various grants and a very effective Green Corps project. We look forward to your company while you visit our website.
